Since 2015, the NC Chinese Lantern Festival has transformed Cary’s Koka Booth Amphitheatre into one of the most magical experiences in North Carolina, with more than 15,000 LED lights and 40 handcrafted lantern displays created by artisans who travel all the way from China to build them onsite.
The 2025 festival runs November 15, 2025 through January 11, 2026, marking its 10th anniversary.
One of the showstoppers of the Chinese Lantern Festival is the massive Chinese Dragon floating majestically on Symphony Lake.
The dragon is an incredible 164 feet long—longer than three school buses—it tower installed by crane with a 15-person crew.

It’s the best way to get shots of just you in the tunnel without feeling rushed or getting in the way of incoming guests.

Sichuan Street Pork Skewers & Fried Rice
Real talk: the Sichuan pork skewers had me hopeful when I walked up to the window. Three skewers for $15 sounded promising.
Flavor-wise? They absolutely delivered.
The sweet Thai chili marinade gave them a savory-sweet pop that hit all the right notes.
But here’s the truth: it was a mixed experience.
One skewer was tender, juicy, and downright delicious — the kind of bite that makes you think, Okay, we’re onto something.
The other two? A little on the dry side. Not terrible, just enough to make my picky-about-pork brain sigh a little.
If you don’t mind the price and you don’t mind the possibility of dry edges, these could still be a good pick for you. They’re flavorful, the portion is decent, and they do fill you up.
But for me personally? Probably not a repeat purchase — I like my pork consistently tender, not playing roulette.
Now, about the fried rice.
Flavor-wise, it was solid — surprisingly bold with a mild kick that kept me going back for more. But the portion size? Let’s just say the tiny $9 box felt more like a sample cup at Costco than dinner. Delicious, yes.
Filling, absolutely not.

I didn’t try everything — though I really wanted to.

And for what it’s worth, I had chicken bites last year and they were delicious, though I’m not sure if they’re made the exact same way this year.

Yes, the glowing dragons and vibrant lantern sculptures are always mesmerizing, but what truly caught me off guard this year were the interactive surprises woven throughout the festival.
The mirror maze had me laughing at my own reflection while trying to figure out which “me” was actually the exit, and the shadow dance screen pulled out everyone’s inner performer — kids and adults alike jumping around to see their silhouettes come alive in color.
Then there were the air blowers and playful smoke cannons that puffed out little clouds as you walked by,
plus the interactive musical pieces and games that invited you to tap, stomp, and play your way through the trail.
Every corner offered something new and unexpected, turning the entire festival into an experience that felt immersive, joyful, and delightfully alive.
And let’s talk about the food!
I couldn’t get enough of the egg rolls and although the pork skewers and fried rice didn’t quite live up to their price point, I’m still glad I tried them for the flavor.

But the biggest surprise? How I still left the festival feeling different — even in my second year.
