Best Luxury Hotels in North Carolina
โ โ โ
Where I stayed
1. The Inn on Biltmore Estate, Asheville

I kicked off my year in style, celebrating my birthday at The Inn on Biltmore Estate, and let me tell you, it was a celebration to remember.
From the moment I stepped into my luxurious room with its classic elegance and sweeping estate views, I knew Iโd made the right splurge.
I pampered myself with spa treatments, great food, indulged in a chocolate meditation (yes, thatโs a thing that they offer right on the estate grounds and itโs every bit as amazing as it sounds), and embraced the art of slowing downโsomething we all deserve on our special day.

Sure, it was more than I usually spend on a hotel room, but sometimes you just need to say yes to yourself.
This wasnโt just a place to stay; it was an experience that made me feel cherished and recharged.
As someone who visits the estate multiple times a year with my annual pass, I already love wandering the gardens and soaking in the beauty of Biltmore.
Staying at The Inn brought that magic to life in a whole new way.

If youโre looking to turn an occasion into something truly unforgettable, this is the place to do it. Trust me, youโre worth it!

2. Kimpton Hotel Arras, Downtown Asheville

Ever had one of those โbucket listโ hotels youโve been eyeing for years, promising yourself youโd stay there one day? For me, Kimpton Hotel Arras in Downtown Asheville was at the top of the list.
This year, I finally made it happenโand turned it into a family adventure!
My daughter and I have always loved Asheville getaways, so when she wanted to show her boyfriend our favorite downtown haunts, I booked us into the tallest hotel in the area.

The central location was perfect for hopping between unique shops and amazing eats, but the real magic was in the little moments, like watching a street performer juggle on a unicycle from our window while the Blue Ridge Mountains painted the horizon.
Kimpton Hotel Arras is as chic as it is welcoming.
The buildingโs past life as a bank is evident in its luxe detailsโthink Calacatta marble and bold metalsโwhile its boutique charm shines in the local art and thoughtful touches.
The onsite restaurant is a foodieโs dream.

I’m love a good avocado toast for breakfast and their onsite restaurant, Bargello, didn’t disappoint.
And though I didnโt bring a pet this time, I couldnโt help but smile at how pet-friendly they are (no size limits here!). I’ve even overheard staff say, “If it can fit through the door, it can stay in our hotel). Wow!
If youโre craving a stylish, memorable stay in downtown Asheville, trust meโthis is the place to check off your list.

3. Old Marshall Jail, Marshall

Ever spent the night in jailโon purpose?
Donโt worry, this isnโt a confession, but a glowing review of one of the most unique stays Iโve ever had: The Old Marshall Jail in Marshall, NC.
This wasnโt just a place to crash; it was an experience.
From the moment I donned my โInmate of the Monthโ shirt (yes, I bought it on Amazon before I left for my trip, because how could I not?), I knew this would be a stay to remember.

The Old Marshall Jail is brimming with history and humor, blending its past life as a county jail with quirky, modern-day comforts and Zadies, a trendy on-site restaurant.
The vibe?
Equal parts charm and creativity. Between exploring Marshallโs sweet shops and live music scene and soaking up the stunning mountain views, this stay felt like stepping into a storybook.
Sadly, Hurricane Helene took a toll on both the jail and the town of Marshall on September 27th, 2024, and they arenโt currently accepting visitors. But this gem deserves a spot on your radar for when itโs ready to reopen.

Letโs help rebuild this slice of Appalachian magic. Click the link to Old Marshall Jail’s Go Fund Me account to support recovery efforts for Old Marshall Jail and the town of Marshallโitโs a worthy cause that will help this incredible place welcome visitors again.

Mid-Range Lodging

4. Island Guest House, Manteo

Lost Colony Suite (The suite I stayed in is mid-range, but they also have a motel withbudget-friendly options (under $100 per night) as well.
Ever stay somewhere that feels like it was designed just to make you smile? Thatโs exactly how I felt about The Island Guest House in Manteo.
From the moment I arrived, I was charmed by the beachy colors, cozy decor, and front porch swings that seemed to whisper, โStay a while.โ

My two-room, Lost Colony suite was surprisingly spacious (and easy on the wallet!), with thoughtful touches everywhereโincluding a toilet paper roll folded into a boat.
Yes, you read that rightโa boat. Itโs the kind of quirky detail that tells you the owners truly care about making your stay special.
Speaking of the owners, they were the kind of friendly that makes you feel instantly at home. Add in a nod to local history with subtle references to the Lost Colony, and this guesthouse was a perfect mix of charm, comfort, and connection.

And it’s within walking distance to the historic downtown shops and restaurants!
Not to mention it’s close to many of the attractions and things to do in the Outer Banks.
Whether youโre planning a beach getaway or want to immerse yourself in the history of Manteo, this spot is a must. Keep it on your list for 2025โitโs the kind of place youโll want to return to again and again.

5. Admiral’s Quarters, Kure Beach

Looking for a place where the ocean is your front yard and adventure is just around the corner? Let me introduce you to The Admiralโs Quarters in Kure Beach.
I stayed in a cozy two-bedroom suite with a balcony that made me feel like I had a VIP pass to sunrise.
This motel is all about location: a short stroll to the beachfront restaurants, shops, and Ocean Front Park, and just minutes from the Fort Fisher Aquarium (a must-visit if youโre in the area).
The vibrant, cheerful vibe of the property instantly put me in beach mode, with colors that seemed to mirror the sand, sea, and sky outside.
Click here to watch my perfect day at Kure Beach

While I paid a mid-range rate in the off-season, donโt be surprised if summer prices creep over $200 a nightโtrust me, the convenience and views make it worth it during peak season.
Whether youโre traveling with family, friends, or flying solo, The Admiralโs Quarters offers the kind of laid-back charm that keeps you close to the action without losing that relaxed beachy feel.
If youโre dreaming of a Kure Beach getaway, add this spot to your shortlist for next summerโitโs got everything you need for an unforgettable stay.

โ โ โ
6. Grafton Lodge, Lake Lure

Whatโs better than staying in the town where Dirty Dancing was filmed?
Watching the movie for the first time with your daughter in a cozy B&Bโat least, thatโs my cherished memory from Grafton Lodge in Lake Lure.
My daughter and I headed to Lake Lure for an overnight trip to visit the iconic Flowering Bridge, just months before Hurricane Helene tragically swept it away.
While Iโm heartbroken over its loss, Iโm so grateful we had the chance to experience its beauty.
We also stumbled upon a festival at Fae Nectar, a medieval-themed restaurant and bar just minutes from the lodge. Thankfully, Fae Nectar is still open, and I highly recommend checking it out for a truly unique experience.

Back at Grafton Lodge, we stayed in the Romantic Room 1 King BDโa warm, welcoming space with a king bed and a mountainside balcony perfect for morning coffee or stargazing.
The highlight of the night? Popping in their copy of Dirty Dancing (provided in the room) and reliving my teen years while my daughter watched it for the first time, all in the very place it was filmed.

Breakfast the next morning was a foodieโs dream: made-to-order omelets, fresh fruit, sausage, toast, orange juice, and coffeeโall crafted by a chef who clearly knows how to start your day right.
Whether itโs a solo escape, a romantic retreat, or a group getaway, Grafton Lodge is worth adding to your Lake Lure itinerary.
โ โ โ
7. Hampton Inn, Marion

Hunting Bigfoot calls for a good nightโs sleep, and during my trip to Marion for their quirky and unforgettable Bigfoot Festival, the Hampton Inn delivered just that.
I booked a 1 King with a sofa bed, and the room felt surprisingly spaciousโperfect for kicking back after a day spent exploring all things Sasquatch.
While the hotel is only a short drive from downtown Marion, it has a tucked-away, peaceful vibe thatโs great if you want to escape the hustle.
That said, if youโre a fan of walkable access to shops and restaurants, this might not be the spot for you. Youโll need to hop in the car to get to any action.
During my stay, I split time between this Hampton Inn and the Comfort Inn (check out the Budget-Friendly section for more on that), which gave me a great comparison.

The Hampton Inn stood out for its clean, cozy vibe and comfortable accommodations. While it might not have the convenience of downtown, itโs a great choice if youโre looking for a quiet retreat after your Bigfoot adventures.
Heading to Marion for the festival or just curious about NCโs quirkier side? Add this Hampton Inn to your list for a peaceful stay just minutes from the fun.

8. Vintage 1 Bedroom with Living/Kitchen

Normally, I avoid VRBOsโthose cleaning fees can creep up on you like Barney Fife ready to write a ticket.
But when I spotted a Vintage One Bedroom with Living/Kitchen in Mount Airy for just $65 a night, I decided to roll the dice.
Even with the added fees, my total came to around $122 per nightโsquarely mid-range pricing.
But unlike a generic hotel room, this rental was bursting with Mayberry charm.
The one-bedroom setup featured a cozy living space, a full kitchen complete with vintage appliances.

The tin tub and sink in the bathroom that added a rustic, old-timey flair. It felt like I had stepped into my own retro sitcom set.
The best part? Its walkable location to downtown Mount Airy and all the historic sites made it easy to explore while still feeling like a local.
While the price might straddle budget and mid-range territory, the charm and personality put it firmly ahead of most mid-range hotels Iโve stayed in.
Heading to Mount Airy? Skip the cookie-cutter hotels and book this vintage gemโitโs got all the personality of Mayberry without any of Barneyโs nitpicking.
โ โ โ
9. Courtyard By Marriott, Carolina Beach

My final hotel stay of 2024 brought me to the Courtyard Marriott in Carolina Beachโa perfect choice for getting to know this lively beach town a little better.
I was in town for a members-only, after-hours Christmas event at the NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher, which I usually visit while staying in Kure Beach just a few minutes down the road. But this time, I decided to embrace Carolina Beach, and Iโm so glad I did.
This hotelโs location couldnโt be betterโitโs right on the boardwalk & oceanfront.

I stayed in a king room with a sofa and balcony, and let me tell you, the view was absolutely stunning. Waking up to the sound of waves crashing and seeing the ocean stretch out before me from my balcony was the highlight of my stay.
The big, comfy sofa made it easy to relax, and I could even spot the pool below.
Plus, Hurricane Alley Restaurant & Bar sits conveniently right behind the hotel, so grabbing food or drinks is a breeze. I enjoyed lunch at Sunny Daze Smokehouse and I could see the Courtyard Marriott from the rooftop seating.

The walkability of this area is another winโplenty of restaurants and shops are just steps away.
I placed this hotel in the mid-range category because of its consistent amenities and pricing during the off-season (like when I visited).
Itโs worth noting, though, that during the summer and peak seasons, rates skyrocket to $200โ$300 a night. Carolina Beach comes alive in those warmer months, and this hotel becomes the place to stay.
Wheelchair Accessible Beach Access!

One extra thoughtful touch?
The hotel offers a beach-friendly wheelchair for guests to use. If you or someone in your group has mobility issues but still wants to enjoy the beach, this amenity makes a day on the sand much more accessibleโsomething I found to be a truly special offering.
โ โ โ
Budget Friendly
10. Rodeway Inn & Suites On The River, Cherokee

Ever take a gamble on a budget motel and hope it doesnโt turn into a travel horror story?
Thatโs exactly how I felt when I booked the Rodeway Inn & Suites on the River in Cherokeeโbut for $67 a night with a balcony overlooking the river, I figured it was a risk worth taking.
This stay was part of a longer trip where I vowed to finally check off the North Carolina experiences Iโd been putting off for years.
First on the list? Unto These Hills, the iconic outdoor drama telling the story of the Cherokee people.
Since I was saving my splurge for later in the trip (hello, Old Marshall Jail), I needed something affordable and close to the action.

This motel was just minutes down the road from the production site and offered unbeatable value.
Sure, there were some cleanliness quirks and a bit of wear and tear (it’s not a place for everyone), but for the price and location, it got the job done.
The balcony overlooking the river was a peaceful bonus and perfect for morning coffee before the busy day ahead.
If youโre planning to catch Unto These Hills or explore Cherokee on a budget, this motel is a solid option.

11. Comfort Inn, Marion

Looking for a budget-friendly option in Marion that doesnโt skimp on space or convenience? The Comfort Inn might just be the hidden gem youโre afterโquirks and all.
While this older property does show some wear and tear, the value it offers more than makes up for itโespecially during a busy festival weekend.
My room was surprisingly spacious, with a kitchenette that made snacking between Bigfoot Festival adventures a breeze.
What stood out most were the arched partitions separating the entryway, living space, and bedroom. Itโs a small detail, but it gave the room a touch of character that you donโt often find in budget hotels.

Another win?
The location.
Unlike the Hampton Inn (mentioned in the mid-range section above), this spot has a few restaurants within walking distance and more just a short drive away.
Plus, downtown Marion is close enough to make exploring easy without feeling like youโre too far from the action.
If youโre visiting Marion and want a practical, comfortable stay that wonโt break the bank, the Comfort Inn is worth considering.
Itโs not perfect, but it offers good value, a great location, and plenty of space to stretch out after a day of festival fun.
โ โ โ
12. Super 8 Black Mountain

Looking for the cheapest place to stay in Black Mountain? Well, the Super 8 fits the billโbut letโs just say, you get what you pay for.
This spring (2024), I took two of my daughters to celebrate the reopening of Catawba Falls, one of the many cool things to do in Old Fort, NC
After a day of hiking those gorgeous trails (and tackling the new stairs to the upper falls), we needed a place to crash nearby.
Black Mountain was the obvious choice, and the Super 8 had rates so low, it seemed like a no-brainer.
Unfortunately, it wasnโt exactly a win.
The room had a lingering smell that wasnโt exactly inviting, and the property itself felt rundown.
A fight broke out in the parking lot during our stay, which made me question the safety of the place.

The one bright spot?
Our room had a jacuzzi tub, which the girls enjoyed after our long hike. But beyond that, I was so unimpressed that I didnโt even bother snapping picturesโa rarity for me.
If youโre purely looking for a cheap rate and donโt mind sacrificing comfort, this might work for you. But personally? Since this post is about “best” hotels in NC, I’ll say that this one is going to be one of the best rates that you’ll get, but that’s about it. Iโll spend a little more next time for a better experience.
While it may not be the nicest hotel in NC, it does have one of the nicest rates.
Sometimes, the savings just arenโt worth it.
Additional Stays
Here’s a list of where I’ve stayed so far in 2025. I’ll update as I go along my journey’s through out the year.
โ โ โ
13. VRBO Rental over La Dolce Vita Bakery in Bryson City (The Mitchell Suite)

If riding the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad is on your bucket list, Iโve found the sweetest place to stayโliterally.
On my 2025 trip to Bryson City, I stayed in a charming VRBO rental above La Dolce Vita Bakery in the Mitchell Suite, and Iโm not exaggerating when I say the location couldnโt have been better.
Itโs catty-corner from the train depot, so you can sip your morning coffee on the front patio and watch the action start for the dayโor, head out to the back deck of the Mitchell Suite and catch a view of the railroad turnaround. Yes, really.
The suite itself is hugeโspacious, cozy, and super comfortable with two beds. One is set back behind partial walls, giving it that โalmost a second bedroomโ vibe without the door.
Itโs perfect if youโre traveling with a friend or kids and want a little separation.
And the icing on the muffin?
You get a free muffin and coffee from Dolce Bakery, plus 10% off anything else during your stay.
Between the warm baked goods, prime location, and all the cozy comforts, itโs the ultimate way to immerse yourself in downtown Bryson City.
If youโre planning a train ride adventure, this spot is a no-brainerโstay where the magic (and the muffins) are made.
If you can’t get into the Mitchell Suite, they have a 2nd loft available for rental. It’s called the Everett Suite.
14. Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort, Cherokee

Ever walked into a hotel and thought, โDid I just enter a small city?โ Thatโs exactly what Harrahโs Cherokee Casino Resort feels likeโand this year, I finally made the leap from curious visitor to overnight guest.
Iโve visited Harrahโs beforeโmainly to eat at one of their many award-winning restaurants or to just explore the resort for fun.
But staying there?
That was a first.
I decided to go all in (pun intended) and booked a one-bedroom corner suite with a whirlpool tub during the off-season when rates are much more budget-friendly than peak season.
It was the perfect excuse to splurge a little without blowing my whole travel budget.

Harrahโs is the largest hotel in North Carolina, and it truly feels like a destination in itself.
Youโve got multiple award-winning restaurants like
Wicked Weed Brewing, Brio Italian
Guy Fieriโs Cherokee Kitchen
and Gordon Ramsayโs Food Market
along with an arcade, bowling alley, live shows, shopping, and events. It’s the kind of place where youโll never run out of things to doโbut if youโre craving mountain air and natural beauty, you’re still just a short drive from iconic Western NC attractions.
A few tips if you stay:
*The property is massive. If you’re not up for hauling luggage across multiple buildings, use the valetโyouโll thank yourself later.
*If you have mobility challenges, youโll be glad to know they offer scooter rentals on-site, making it easier to enjoy everything the resort has to offer comfortably.
Whether you’re going for a mountain escape with a touch of luxury or just want a resort experience without ever leaving the property, Harrahโs Cherokee is a fantastic pick.

16. Hampton Inn โ Wilkesboro, NC

Mid-Range Road Trip Stop
I made a quick pit stop in Wilkesboro on my road trip down to Greenville, SC, just to check out Moravian Falls. I needed a place close to the highway, near the falls, and easy on the walletโand thatโs where the Hampton Inn came through.
Letโs be realโit was your standard midโrange hotel: clean, comfortable, and conveniently located. Itโs just off Route 421, offers free hot breakfast and WiโFi, and is only minutes from Moravian Fallsโmaking it ideal if your day’s plan includes chasing waterfalls and exploring historic small towns.
Plus, it’s not far from historic downtown Wilkesboro, where youโll find Cub Creek Parkโa great little spot with walking trails, pickleball courts, and even a splash pad.
Stay here when you want efficiency, cleanliness, and convenienceโexactly what I needed. Would I stay again? Absolutely.
If you want a no-fuss stopover that gets you back on the roadโor into the forestโquickly, this place is worth checking out.
