Out of all the NC aquariums, this is the one I’ve visited the most over the last 20 years.
I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve walked through those doors, thanks to being a pass holder which gets me in for FREE.
And let me tell you, I’ve gone solo for some much-needed me-time, as well as taking the kids on day trips and even tagging along as a chaperone on their school field trips.
There’s just something magical about this place that keeps drawing me back in.
It’s not just about gazing at the marine life (although that’s definitely a highlight!), but it’s also about the memories made, the knowledge gained, and the passion fueled for protecting our oceans and contributing to conservation.
Even now that my kids are grown and out of school, they still want to go with me!
So, trust me when I say, if you’re planning a trip to the Fort Fisher area, this aquarium is a must-visit.

About the NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher
If you’re taking a trip down to Fort Fisher or the Kure Beach area in North Carolina, you can’t miss out on the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher.
Nestled about 15 miles south of Wilmington, this aquarium offers a chance to dive into the underwater world like never before.
Originally starting out in 1976 as the Marine Science Center, it officially transformed into an aquarium in 1986, joining the ranks of other fin-tastic aquatic havens across the state.
Surrounded by the stunning natural beauty of the Cape Fear River, salt marshes and the Atlantic Ocean, it’s truly a sight to behold.
Plus, with a strong focus on conservation and research, it’s no surprise that they’re accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).
So, you can rest easy knowing you’re supporting an organization dedicated to marine life and protecting our precious ecosystems.
And let me tell you, the experiences they offer are nothing short of jaw-dropping! From up-close encounters with marine life like sting rays to interactive programs like observing divers swimming through the river shoals, there’s something for everyone, no matter your age or background.

What can you see at the Fort Fisher Aquarium?
Otters:
Immediately after you present your admission ticket and pose for the aquarium photographer, you’ll walk through the doors and say, “Hello!” to the playful otters.
Let me tell you about the heartwarming tale of Leia and Quincy, proud parents to a trio of Asian small-clawed otter pups born on January 31st, 2024.
While these adorable bundles of joy may not always be on display, their presence serves as a beacon of hope for their vulnerable species across Southeast Asia.
Meanwhile, their habitat regulars, Asta and Ray, a mother-son duo, steal the spotlight with their playful antics. Asta, at 15 years young, and Ray, at 4, grace the habitat daily from 9 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., offering visitors a glimpse into their dynamic world.
On January 21st, 2025 this playful otter family was relocated to the NC Zoo in Asheboro and a new duo, Milli and Binx is moving in!

Alligators:
Meet Luna, the star of the show! Luna isn’t your average alligator—she’s an albino beauty, sporting a striking white color that makes her stand out like a beacon in a swampy sea.
This unique hue might seem dazzling to us, but in the wild, it would spell trouble for Luna.
Thankfully, she’s found a cozy home here for almost two decades, captivating visitors of all ages with her charm.
We can’t forget her trusty sidekick, Gantu!
These two pals can usually be found lounging under the toasty glow of their heat lamp, munching on tasty enrichment treats, or gracefully gliding through their pool.
Personally, I’ve had some unforgettable moments snapping pictures of Luna and Gantu as they cozied up to the glass, giving me a close-up glimpse into their fascinating world.
Cape Fear Shoals:
The North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher is here to unveil the aquatic wonders of the Cape Fear Shoals!
I find it difficult to walk away from this colossal 235,000-gallon aquarium teeming with sharks, stingrays, a majestic sea turtle named Shelldon, and even a sneaky moray eel.
Their viewing bubble has been a favorite for my kids (oh, yeah, and me too!) to get a front-row seat to the underwater spectacle, where Sand Tiger Sharks reign supreme and Shelldon steals hearts with every graceful glide.
But it’s not just about marveling at these incredible creatures; it’s about understanding and protecting them too.
Sand tiger sharks and sea turtles like Shelldon face real threats in our oceans, from commercial fishing to climate change.
As ambassadors of conservation, they remind us all to take action in safeguarding our marine environments. 🐢
Coquina Outcrop:
One of the coolest spots in this aquatic paradise is the Coquina Outcrop habitat.
Here, you can get up close and personal with some incredible critters like yellow stingrays, sea stars, and even pencil urchins.
Yep, you heard me right – you can actually touch these fascinating creatures!
Loggerhead Sea Turtle Conservation:
Meet Aleta and Pico, two loggerhead sea turtle hatchlings making waves in the conservation habitat.
But here’s the twist: these adorable ambassadors aren’t just any turtles – they’re part of a special program that sees the Aquarium take in two hatchlings annually, rescued by the dedicated volunteers of the Pleasure Island Sea Turtle Project.
Aleta, meaning “flipper” in Spanish, and Pico, meaning “beak” in Spanish, were named by local students, representing the epitome of resilience and care, nurtured by the expert hands of the NCAFF aquarist team.
When I visited most recently we saw this little guy who was rescued and will be set back out in the ocean once hurricane season is over.
As they frolic in their watery playground, they not only captivate visitors but also embody the Aquarium’s mission to inspire appreciation and conservation of aquatic environments.
Caribbean Corals:
You’re strolling through the aquarium, and BAM! You’re greeted by a kaleidoscope of colors, bustling with fish, corals, and all sorts of aquatic pals.
It’s like stepping into a real-life Finding Nemo adventure! From the quirky red spotted hawkfish to the cool clown wrasses, there’s a whole cast of characters waiting to charm you.
And here’s the kicker: this place is like a living, breathing storybook. You’ll witness the corals’ journey from tiny sprouts to full-blown underwater masterpieces, right alongside their fishy buddies.
Maverick:
Maverick, the resident bald eagle with a story as captivating as his gaze.
Since 2014, Maverick has called the aquarium home after a wing injury grounded him in Wisconsin.
Now, he’s a proud ambassador for wildlife conservation, reminding us all about the importance of protecting our natural habitats.
Keep your eyes peeled for Maverick during your visit, although he might be off-duty from time to time.

Do I have to pay for parking?
No. Parking is complimentary and accessible parking is available near the Aquarium entrance.
How long should I plan to be at the aquarium?
Most visitors take about 2-2 1/2 hours tour the Aquarium.
When is the aquarium most crowded?
Weekends, holidays and rainy days tend to bring in the most visitors.
When are school groups most likely to visit the aquarium?
April and May, on week days between 10AM-2PM are when large school groups generally visit the Aquarium.
Can I get a refund or exchange my ticket?
There are no refunds or exchanges allowed within 24 hours of ticketed entry time?
Can I bring food or drinks inside the aquarium?
No. No food or drinks are permitted indoors.
Am I guaranteed to see all the animals on exhibit?
No. Some areas of the aquarium may be closed and some animals may not be visible for a variety of reasons including regular or special care for the animals and their living space. Please contact the aquarium if you have questions about specific animals or experiences.

- Fort Fisher Aquarium from Raleigh: Approx. two and a half hours on I-40 (145 miles)
- Fort Fisher Aquarium from Charlotte: Approx. four hours on US-74E (218 miles)
- Fort Fisher Aquarium from Asheville: Approx. five hours and forty minutes on US-74E (352 miles)
Is the Aquarium at Fort Fisher Accessible?
The Aquarium is wheelchair accessible. A limited number of wheelchairs are available upon request for on-site use.
If you need special accommodation such as an ASL interpreter or a facilitated experience for blind guests, please send an email request at least two weeks before your scheduled visit.
Can I bring my pet inside the aquarium?
Trained service animals are welcome in the Aquarium. Please inform Visitor Services if a trained service animal will be assisting you.
*Animals, other than service animals, are NOT allowed in the Aquarium.
If you bring your pet, you can NOT leave them in your car while you explore the aquarium. New Hanover County ordinance prohibits owners from leaving dogs unattended in a vehicle or tied up.
Are strollers allowed inside the aquarium?
Strollers are allowed, however, strollers greater than 36″ wide may be too large for some doorways.
Can I rent a stroller at the aquarium?
The Aquarium does not loan, rent or provide a stroller-checking service.
Is grilling allowed on the aquarium grounds?
No. Barbecue grills, fire pits and open flames are prohibited on Aquarium grounds.
Is smoking allowed at the aquarium?
No. The Aquarium buildings are smoke-free including electronic/vapor cigarettes. Smoking is only permitted outside of the garden exit gate and parking area.
Can I use flash photography in the aquarium?
Built-in flash devices on still cameras are permitted.
Flashlights, laser pointers and video lights are not allowed. Please keep these and any other lighting devices off as you tour the Aquarium, for animal safety.
