Inspiration for your North Carolina Activities in 2025!
1) See a lighthouse
The NC lighthouses have a special place in my heart and memory. I’ve had a blast exploring them with my kids.
If you’ve also found yourself daydreaming about coastal adventures, picturesque views, and the rhythmic dance of lighthouse beams cutting through the night, then you’re in for a treat. North Carolina boasts not one or two, but eight lighthouses waiting to be explored.
From Bald Head Island Lighthouse, the Oldest Standing Lighthouse in NC. Accessible only by boat, to the Ocracoke Island Lighthouse that was built by hand in 1823 and is the oldest continuously operating lighthouse in North Carolina and the second oldest in the nation.
These beacons of the Tar Heel State are an invitation to sail away on a journey filled with coastal wonders.
So, buckle up your sea legs and get ready to see how many beacons you can check off your North Carolina Activities bucket list in the enchanting world of iconic lighthouses!
2) Find a waterfall
One of my all time favorite North Carolina activities, hands down, is chasing waterfalls!
With over 250 waterfalls, the Tar Heel State proudly wears the title of the “Land of Waterfalls.”
Each waterfall tells a unique story, whispering secrets of time and tranquility. From the majestic heights of Catawba Falls to the hidden gems of Crabtree Falls tucked away in the lush Mountains of the Blue Ridge Parkway, North Carolina’s waterfalls offer a refreshing symphony for the soul.
Plunge into a journey through this watery wonderland, where laughter echoes against the rocks, and the dance of cascading water creates a melody that resonates with the heart. Get ready to dive into the magic of North Carolina’s waterfalls!
3) Play in the ocean
The ocean is calling to you to come out and play! Experience one of the thrilling activities waiting to be explored! Let me suggest some North Carolina activities that you may want to try at the beach:
If you’re looking for more than an average North Carolina beach day and body surfing, you can spice things up a bit by diving into the rhythm of the waves with surf lessons that’ll have you hanging ten like a pro.
Paddle your way through the scenic coastline with kayaking adventures that promise both serenity and excitement.
If soaring through the sky is more your style, why not try your hand (and feet) at hang gliding lessons with the backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean?
For a more relaxed sea experience, embark on boat tours or seize the freedom to captain your own voyage with boat rentals.
Catch your next North Carolina activity by going on a fishing Trip!

So, grab your sunscreen and check off some North Carolina activities off your bucket list!
4) Go Hiking
Hiking is one of my all time favorite North Carolina activities, where the trails weave through the picturesque landscapes like a tapestry.
I love seeking out NC trails from the heights of the mountain trails, like the short but beautiful hike on Craggy Pinnacle on the Blue Ridge Parkway, to the soothing sounds of my waterfall hikes.
North Carolina offers a smorgasbord of outdoor trails for every type of hiker including the unique and quirky art trail at the NC Museum of Art in Raleigh where you can check out art installations and learn about them while you walk.
Whether you’re conquering the iconic Appalachian Trail, strolling along a city greenway or searching for the perfect mountain view along the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Tar Heel State has something for everyone.
Did you know that North Carolina has the highest elevation point east of the Mississippi River? It’s true! And you can hike to it your self at Mount Mitchell State Park.

Check off your NC Bucket List hike by exploring one of the many paths that crisscross this beautiful state, where the only thing heavier than your backpack is the weight of the awe-inspiring views waiting around every bend.
Of course you can always hike on your own, but it’s worth looking into guided hiking events and tours to learn from and see more than what you could without a guide such as:

Let’s talk about some of my favorite spots in North Carolina – our State Parks!
I’ve gotta spill the beans about my favorite nature hangouts, like Umstead Park, Fort Fisher Recreation Area, and Jordan Lake.
Umstead State Park is basically my outdoor wonderland with its epic trails, historical ruins, and lush landscapes – it’s a gem waiting to be explored.
Now, Fort Fisher, on the other hand, is more of a military marvel, taking you back in time with its historical significance along its trails. Since it’s just down the road from the Fort Fisher Aquarium, It makes a lovely combo for a day trip.
And then there’s Jordan Lake – a place where I’ve been camping with family and friends and since it’s not far from where I live, I often go there to catch a sunset.
Picture it: golden sunsets, crackling campfires, and making memories that last a lifetime.
State Parks aren’t just about nature; they’re a gateway to family bonding, conservation and historical adventures.
I personally like to start my year off right with a First Day Hike that takes place at participating parks every year.

- Local Indigenous Events and Powwows: Check for local events, festivals, and powwows organized by Native American communities in North Carolina. These gatherings often include traditional dances, crafts, and storytelling. One of the most notable events of the year is ““Unto These Hills” an outdoor drama that takes place each May -August.

- Cary: While downtown Cary has always been charming it has never made it to the list of Christmas towns. However, since this 7 acres of long awaited park opened in November of 2023, many people are wondering if Cary will take the new spot as North Carolina’s Christmas town.
24) Buy from & Support a Locally Owned Business
There’s magic in supporting local businesses right here in North Carolina and something special about being part of a community that thrives on the unique flavors, talents, and vibes of our fellow North Carolinians.
Click Here to Check Out Our Shop Local Page
When you choose to shop local, you’re not just getting a product – you’re getting a piece of someone’s passion and hard work. Let me share a few of my must-shop places around the State that keep calling me back.
One of my absolute favorites is Bearmeats Indian Den, where authentic treasures crafted by members of the Cherokee Tribe find their way into your hands. The first time I went I left with a large assortment of herbal teas, but you can find all kinds of handcrafted clothing, decor and art too. I can’t wait to go back and buy more!
I love to browse around L.O.F.T of Asheville when I’m in town. Standing for Lost Objects, Found Treasures, It’s a blast to see what kind of quirky and colorful items they have on display.
Jeans Neighborhood Market in Apex is a charming spot nestled smack dab on a stawberry patch, where local North Carolinians showcase their culinary and creative talents. They even sell their own home-made ice cream!
Yum!
The Loose Moose in Bryson City brings a mountain vibe to its carefully curated items. I had fun browsing around here before I hopped on my train ride on the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad.
The Corn Crib in Dillsboro, Port City Pottery, and the shops at the Cotton Exchange in Wilmington are just a few more treasures scattered around our beautiful state.
I feel good supporting these local businesses and encourage you to do the same because we’re not just getting awesome stuff; we’re fostering a sense of community and helping our neighbors pursue their dreams.
