Raleigh:
If you’re looking for the perfect fall getaway, Raleigh should be at the top of your list!
With mild weather that’s just begging you to spend time outdoors, there’s no shortage of things to do.
Whether you’re:
catching the sunset from The Willard’s rooftop bar,
exploring the fun, games and excitement of downtown
or exploring trails at Umstead Park (one of my personal favorites),
the fresh fall air makes everything feel extra special.
Raleigh also knows how to celebrate the season, with events like the NC State Fair bringing in all the fried food, rides, and fun you could want. Plus, the city’s museums are top-notch if you’re in the mood for a little indoor culture.
From fall festivals to crisp hikes, Raleigh combines the best of city and nature for the perfect autumn escape.
Whether you’re grabbing a seasonal cocktail or getting your nature fix on one of our scenic trails, Raleigh in the fall truly has that extra special fall vibe!

Hendersonville:
When the crisp air of fall sweeps through North Carolina, Hendersonville is a must-visit destination that should be at the top of your list.
As an NC resident and travel professional, I can’t recommend this charming town enough, especially during the apple harvest season.
Hendersonville is famously known as the “Apple Capital” of North Carolina, and for good reason. The town’s annual North Carolina Apple Festival, held every Labor Day weekend (Aug. 30-Sept. 2, 2024), is a vibrant celebration of all things apple.
You can expect everything from apple tastings to cider sampling, and, of course, the chance to pick your own apples from the many orchards that dot the landscape. It’s the perfect way to kick off the fall season and indulge in some of the freshest produce you’ll find anywhere.
But the apple fun doesn’t stop there. Throughout the fall, Hendersonville offers a variety of activities that will immerse you in the season’s splendor.
Don’t miss the opportunity to visit some of the local orchards, where you can pick your own apples or simply enjoy a hayride through the orchards with the breathtaking backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Some Orchards You May Want to Check out are:
For a bit of extra fall festivity, nearby Flat Rock Playhouse often hosts autumn-themed productions, adding a touch of culture to your visit.
And if you’re up for a short drive, head over to the Mountain State Fair in Fletcher, just a few minutes away. This fair, held every September, is a great spot for experiencing classic fair rides, sampling delicious fall treats, and enjoying local crafts and entertainment.
Whether you’re munching on a freshly picked apple or sipping on some local cider, Hendersonville and its surrounding areas offer a quintessential fall experience in North Carolina that’s both relaxing and filled with seasonal charm.
When is the Best Time to Visit?
Hendersonville is at an elevation level of 2152 ft which means that the peak fall foliage is expected to be the week of October 23-30.

Crabtree Falls:
The Crabtree Falls Trail in North Carolina, along the Blue Ridge Parkway, is the perfect North Carolina Fall destination.
Located in Little Switzerland, a little over an hour northeast of Asheville, Crabtree Falls is a moderately challenging trail that will be accessible to most hikers. The trail leads through a beautiful old-growth forest, which turns dazzling shades of gold, red, and orange in the autumn, to the base of a 70 foot waterfall, with countless streams cascading down a rocky cliff side.
The Trail
The trail has a few sections of rocky stairs, uneven roots, and steep inclines, so you should wear hiking boots to provide extra traction and support.
That being said, most hikers in decent shape should be able to tackle this hike, especially with a few breaks to take in the beautiful views!
The Blue Ridge Parkway
Driving the Blue Ridge Parkway is one of the most popular autumn activities, not only in North Carolina, but also in the entire country, given its spectacular fall colors—and, for better or worse, Crabtree Falls is one of the most popular hikes along the Parkway.
What to Expect
Accordingly, be prepared for some serious traffic and crowds in the fall. While there’s a decent amount of parking here, you may struggle to find a spot if you show up on a weekend, during peak fall colors.
Pro Tip!
If you’re looking to enjoy the trail in solitude, consider visiting on a weekday and quite early—or, alternatively, visit before mid-October or after early November, when most of the crowds have passed.
Where to Stay
Crabtree Falls makes a perfect pitstop along a Blue Ridge Parkway road trip, so consider renting a cozy cabin for a night or two in the area, like the Linville Falls Lodge and Cottages. This adorable property strikes the perfect balance between rustic and comfortable, with fire pits and complimentary breakfast for guests to enjoy.

Chattanooga, TN: Tina Tolbert of The Southern Travelista
About a 90-minute drive from southwestern North Carolina, you will find the charming little city of Chattanooga, Tennessee.
Chattanooga is a hidden gem for travelers with so many things for families to enjoy. My family visits Chattanooga often and it has quickly become one of our favorite vacation spots!
Located at the base of the Appalachian Mountain Ridge, Chattanooga is an amazing place to visit in fall because of the great weather and the mesmerizing views. The gorgeous fall colors fill the Tennessee Valley, and there is no better way to take them all in than with a trip up Lookout Mountain!
If you are brave enough, take the Incline Railway for a thrilling way to scale the mountain. Once you reach the top you will be delighted with panoramic views of the Tennessee Valley.
Once on top of the mountain, my family usually takes the short walk down to Point Park, a part of the National Park system. The visitors center there has a fun diorama that gives you a glimpse into the Battle of Lookout Mountain.
Where to Stay
Whenever we are in Chattanooga, we make sure to find a hotel right in the downtown area. Not only does this put you within walking distance to tons of family-friendly activities, but you can also park at your hotel and not have to pay for public parking when sightseeing or dining downtown.
What to Do?
The award-winning Creative Discovery Museum and Tennessee Aquarium are both great for families. You can also enjoy the riverfront with its parks and scenic lookout areas.
River Cruise
Another favorite of ours is to take a river cruise on the Southern Belle Riverboat. You board the riverboat right downtown, just a quick walk from the Tennessee Aquarium.
The 90-minute boat ride is absolutely beautiful in the fall and the weather is perfect! You can even book a sunset cruise so you can take in both the beauty of fall and the sunset in the valley.

Alexandria, VA: Sierra, Your Guide to Wandering
Located just three hours from Raleigh, NC, Alexandria, VA, is an ideal fall destination for those looking to explore a city steeped in history, charm, and vibrant autumn colors. As a local, I can vouch for Alexandria’s unique appeal during the fall season.
Why Alexandria is Great in Fall
Alexandria’s historic Old Town transforms into a picturesque scene with its cobblestone streets and colonial-era architecture framed by golden autumn leaves.
One of the first port cities in the United States, it offers history and culture lovers a chance to step back in time.
The crisp fall air enhances the experience of wandering through King Street, known for its boutique shops, charming cafes, and historic houses.
Fall Activities and Places to Visit
One of the must-visit spots in the fall is the Torpedo Factory Art Center, located on the waterfront. This converted munitions plant is now home to a variety of artists’ studios and galleries.
Another highlight is Captain’s Row on Prince Street, where you can admire the preserved cobblestone street and snap photos of the historic homes.
For a more immersive experience, take a stroll along the Potomac River at Jones Point Park. The park offers stunning views and a chance to explore the historic Jones Point Lighthouse.
Alexandria Ghost Tours
Fall is the perfect time to experience Alexandria’s rich history and its spookier side with an Alexandria Ghost Tour.
Led by knowledgeable guides in colonial costumes, these tours take you through Old Town’s historic streets by lantern light, sharing eerie tales of haunted sites and local legends.
It’s a fun and thrilling way to learn more about Alexandria’s past while getting into the Halloween spirit. I always take a ghost tour every fall!

Where to Eat
When it comes to dining, Virtue Feed & Grain offers a cozy atmosphere and delicious seasonal dishes.
Another favorite is Vola’s, perfect for savoring fresh seafood (the lobster roll is my favorite). Both spots offer outdoor waterfront seating, allowing you to enjoy the fall weather, an escape from the normal humid Alexandria summers.
Practical Tips
Parking in Old Town can be tricky, but there are several garages and metered street parking options available.
For a hassle-free experience, consider using the free King Street Trolley, which runs from the waterfront to the King Street Metro station, making it easy to get around without worrying about parking.

Great Smokey Mountains: UprootedTraveler.com
Great Smoky Mountains National Park is famously the most visited national park—and one of the most popular fall destinations in the entire country, thanks to its spectacular fall foliage.
Take a Fall Colors Tour in the Smoky Mountains
Cades Cove
While the entire park is worth exploring, Cades Cove is a must-stop for visitors, with a unique mix of historic buildings, wildlife, and spectacular landscapes that look even more jaw-dropping in the fall.
Located a little under three hours west of Asheville, North Carolina, Cades Cove is a stunning valley that’s surrounded by the Appalachian Mountains.
To enjoy the views here, you can drive along a gorgeous 11-mile one-way loop, with plenty of places to explore along the way.
Cades Cove was one of the first areas in this region to be settled by Europeans in the early 1800s.
Today, you can explore their old log cabins, schoolhouses, and churches and learn more about how the settlers here survived throughout the brutal winters and sweltering summers.
Be sure to stop at the gristmill and try some freshly made sorghum, a sweetener that’s similar to honey.
Hiking Trails
Another must-do in Cades Cove is to check out some of its hiking trails to get a deeper glimpse into the valley’s spectacular landscape.
For example, the Abrams Falls Trail winds through an old growth forest, with its foliage turning spectacular shades of red, orange, and gold in the fall, to the base of a 20-foot waterfall, cascading down a rocky cliff side.
Scenic Drive
Even if you’re not much of a hiker, the scenic drive will keep you plenty entertained.
Enjoy jaw-dropping views of the surrounding mountains. It’s an excellent chance to spot wildlife along the way, including;
✅ white-tail deer
✅ wild turkeys
✅ and even black bear, who will be frantically trying to forage before hibernating for the winter.
Take a Self-Guided Driving Tour of the Great Smoky Mountains
Be Aware!
The Great Smoky Mountains and Cades Cove are extremely popular, and people take this scenic drive quite seriously.
So be prepared for traffic to move extremely slowly.
