After living in North Carolina for over two decades, I can confirm that Cherokee is a gem worth revisiting time and time again.
I Just Needed a Place To Sleep!
Typically, I lean towards mid-range hotels, and yes, I’ll occasionally indulge in a luxury splurge. But let’s face it, peak season prices or special events can quickly drive up lodging costs. That’s when I put on my budget-savvy traveler hat and seek out more economical options.
On my recent Cherokee adventure, I was on a mission to check off multiple NC bucket list items on this trip, including the “Unto These Hills” production.
I stumbled upon the Rodeway Inn, Cherokee, NC and its unbelievable rates with balcony river views. I knew I was going to keep busy on this trip and just needed a clean and safe place in the evenings, but I also know that many times . . . you get what you pay for.
Was it worth the risk?

I managed to snag a suite with a balcony river view for just $67* a night!
That’s an absolute steal, especially during peak season.
With such an incredible deal, I couldn’t resist. Sure, I took a leap of faith, knowing there was a risk it could be a letdown. But I booked three nights at the Rodeway Inn & Suites on the River in Cherokee, NC to see if this budget motel could deliver.
My Honest Thoughts

Why I Chose Rodeway Inn & Suites on the River in Cherokee
I’ve lived in NC since 1998 and year after year I said I wanted to see “Unto These Hills” in Cherokee.
Year after year went by and I never saw the production.
This was the year I was determined to change! No more procrastination. I vowed to start doing all the things I said I was going to do, but never did.
This was the fist stop on my, “I’m finally gonna do it!” road trip.
I was on the search for an economical lodging that I could use as my hub for 3 nights. In my search I found Rodeway Inn & Suites on the River, Cherokee, NC.
With its riverside location and a stunningly low rate of $67* a night for a suite with a balcony river view, I was intrigued.
Despite the risk of encountering a “fixer-upper,” the allure of such a bargain was irresistible.
For this post, I dived into the experience to give you the lowdown on this budget hotel, perfect for those who appreciate a good deal.
Pros
Room Layout & Size
The layout of the rooms surpasses expectations for a budget-friendly establishment. The arched doorway separating the living area and the faux windows add warmth and character, setting this place apart from the usual budget motel layout.
My stay in a 2 Queen Bed, 1 Room Suite River View Balcony was cozy and unexpectedly charming.
Ammenities
Budget road-side motels typically offer limited amenities, and this one is no exception. However, it scores points for the free coffee station in the lobby and in-room coffee makers.
My room also featured a mini fridge, and despite its age, the motel has thoughtfully added extra electrical plugs and USB ports for our gadget-loving generation.
Best Feature:
The unbeatable location! Nestled next to a tranquil river and a mere three-minute drive from the Oconaluftee Indian Village, it’s a quick hop to Harrah’s Cherokee Casino and Mingo Falls.

The rate is a godsend for budget travelers. Finding such economical lodging in a prime location with a balcony is a rare treat.

While the main areas like the bed, sheets, and drawers were clean, some parts of the room were a tad neglected.
The furniture was outdated, and bathroom fixtures were missing, with some peeling wallpaper.
Cleanliness Issues:
Although the essential areas were clean, I found some grossly neglected spots, like the mini fridge that wasn’t cleaned out from previous guests and the base of the toilet, barely visible from the bathroom door, was unfortunately dirty when seen from a different angle.

Who Isn’t A Good Fit for This Property
However, it’s not for those:
❌ who demand high attention to detail and spotless cleanliness or are uncomfortable asking the front desk for assistance or changes.
❌ Those who have difficulties going upstairs or who have difficulty carrying luggage up stairs. (Request a room on the ground floor if you do.)
❌ For those who want to be within walking distance to shops and restaurants.
If your more of a mid-range hotel kind-of-a-person, I’d suggest looking into the Holiday Inn Express or the Fairfield Inn & Suites, which is directly across from Harrah’s Cherokee Resort. I’ve personally stayed at that Fairfield Inn and enjoyed my time there.
If luxury or upscale is more your style, perhaps Harrah’s Cherokee Resort may be more your style.

Yes! Given the price and location, I would consider another stay, especially for a busy trip that doesn’t require much time in the room except for sleeping and showering.
However, next time I’d inspect the room before settling in to ensure everything meets my standards.
