Are You Looking for a Quaint, Small Town in NC That’s Big on Art & Live Music?
Yes? Then you’re in luck!
Oct. 2024 Update
Two days before hurricane Helene hit, I posted this article to show my love for Marshall in this guide, showcasing its artsy vibe, lively music scene, and the kind of charm that makes you feel at home.
But Hurricane Helene recently swept through on September 27th, 2024, leaving a path of destruction that touched every corner of this beloved town.
While the storm may have left its mark, the heart of Marshall is as strong as ever, with locals coming together to rebuild and recover.
The damage was significant, with businesses, historic landmarks, and everyday life affected. Spots like Zuma Coffee and the old Marshall Jail Hotel, faced flooding and structural damage, but there’s hope in the community’s resilience and determination to restore what makes Marshall so special.
Needless to say, now is not the time to visit Marshall unless you’re going to volunteer with the clean up and rebuilding of the town.
Many locals have been rallying around the slogan: “Make yourself useful or make yourself scarce.” It’s a great reminder to either contribute meaningfully or kindly wait until the town is ready for visitors again.
Let’s all do our part to support Marshall’s recovery with compassion and respect.
Marshall needs our support now more than ever. Here’s how you can help:
- Volunteer or Donate to Relief Efforts: Contributions to local relief funds will directly support rebuilding efforts.
- Support Local Businesses: Many shops and eateries are still offering services, whether in person or online. Your support can help keep them afloat during this time.
- Share Photos and Stories: I’m updating this article with images and experiences from locals who weathered the storm. If you’d like to share yours, please reach out and let me know how to credit you.
This small, resilient town is more than just a destination—it’s a place worth fighting for. I’m eager to revisit when the time comes, to once again experience all the things I love about Marshall and to celebrate its triumphant return. Together, we can help bring back the magic that makes Marshall unforgettable.
Now, as I look at the damage left behind, I’m reminded of all the reasons Marshall is worth fighting for—the vibrant arts scene, the welcoming community, and the unique history that sets it apart. I stand with the people of Marshall, and I’m committed to helping rebuild what was lost.
This town deserves to be celebrated again, and with your support, we can bring it back stronger than ever.

Why Visit Marshall, NC?
I stumbled upon Marshall, NC, entirely by accident while searching for a place to stay near Asheville.
The hotel prices in Asheville were way too high for peak season and the weekend, so I started looking at nearby towns for something more affordable.
That’s when I found this old jail-turned-boutique hotel.
It looked so cool, and even better—rates were more than half what I’d pay in Asheville.
Sold!
After booking, I dug into what this small town (population: tiny!) had to offer, and wow, was I surprised.
They have:
✅ Amazing restaurants that have even caught the attention of major publications.
Star Diner, a gas station turned restaurant that has been featured in Our State magazine and praised for its vintage charm and top-notch food.
✅ art galleries,
✅ and even an old high school turned into artist lofts! It’s like a mini River Arts District.
✅ And you can find live music happening through out the week!
I only stayed one night, but it left me craving more.
Whether you’re passing through, planning a day trip, or need a laid-back spot to recharge, Marshall will make you fall in love with its artsy charm and chill vibes.
I Spent The Night In Jail in Marshall!
Alright, so maybe I didn’t spend the night as an actual inmate, but hey, my quirky sense of humor couldn’t resist embracing the theme.
After booking my stay at The Old Marshall Jail, I clickety-clicked my way over to Amazon.com and went shopping!
I bought myself a pair of black and white striped inmate pajamas and even snagged an orange “Inmate of the Month” shirt that I upcycled into a custom outfit for my stay.
Let’s just say I fully embraced the experience, minus the actual handcuffs!
Staying in jail has never been this fun—or this stylish.
The locals are the sweetest, with the BEST sense of humor!
One more reason to visit Marshall?
After settling in at The Old Marshall Jail, I decided to check out the live music happening at the Depot on Main Street, just a short walk away.
I thought about dressing up, but honestly, I was already rocking my “Inmate of the Month” shirt and feeling pretty comfy.
It was supposed to rain, and I didn’t plan to stay long—just pop in, soak up the vibes, and listen to a few tunes.
What I didn’t expect was the adorable reactions to my shirt.
With the warmest smiles, a few people congratulated me for being the inmate of the month, and I couldn’t help but wonder—were they just that kind, or did they catch on to my humor and play along?
Either way, it warmed my heart and made me love Marshall 💕even more!💕

The Best Hotel in Marshall NC
First things first—let’s talk about the crowning jewel of Marshall and the reason I even discovered this hidden gem in the first place: The Old Marshall Jail Hotel.
Originally built in 1905, a few local artists purchased this historic building and transformed it into a boutique hotel that opened in 2021.
And let me tell you, the brilliance of their work lies in how they preserved the jail’s artifacts while creating something so stylish.
They used old cell bars and doors throughout the space—seriously, even the table tops in Zadies are made from old doors!
The room I stayed in (The River View Suite) had the original jail cell mechanisms repurposed to open the kitchen pantry.
You’ll find old letters, field notes, and logs incorporated into the decor, from countertops to artwork.
The entire building is part museum, part boutique stay.
For even more fun, there’s live music at their onsite restaurant, Zadies Market, like their Ballad Swap nights.
Ballad Swaps at Zadies bring Southern Appalachian history to life with haunting, unaccompanied songs. From love and loss to war and revenge, these story-filled ballads are a powerful nod to 1700s traditions.
I can honestly say The Old Marshall Jail is one of the coolest places that I’ve ever stayed, and I’ve stayed in some seriously amazing places around the world.
The Old Marshall Jail is more than just a place to crash—it’s a whole experience that honors history while giving you some serious boutique hotel vibes and modern comforts.
In this place, the walls literally speak, telling you the stories of what happened here.

What really won me over?

It’s a little burst of sunshine, kindness and nostalgia to go with your morning caffeine fix!

Lunch
🍕 🥗 🍕 🥗
After a morning exploring the mountains on horseback, you’ll need to refuel, and Mad Co Brew House on Main Street is just the spot.
With a laid-back, rustic vibe, indoor seating, and a dog-friendly covered outdoor patio, they serve up:
🥟 Appetizers
🍕 specialty pizzas
🥖 calzones
🥗 salads
🍰 and desserts.
Now, I’ve made a pact with myself this year to be more adventurous with my food choices. So naturally, I asked the waitress for their specialty.
I mean, this is a pizza place. How weird could it get?
Right?
And she suggested the Fig and Caramelized Onion pizza topped with arugula.
Fig. Caramelized onion? WITH arugula . . .
On a pizza? 😳
That was definitely the last thing I would’ve picked on my own, but I wasn’t about to back down. I ordered it (and a trusty Caprese salad for backup).
As I waited on the patio, taking in the fresh air, my pizza arrived… buried under a mound of fresh arugula. Such a big mountain of greenery I couldn’t even see the fig and onion.
Normally I’m not scared of salad greenery, but on a pizza?
This was new territory!
One bite later, though, I was sold—the sweetness of the fig, the rich caramelized onion, and the arugula worked together in a way I never expected.
I’d totally order it again!
🍕 🥗 🍕 🥗
Afternoon Activity
After lunch, it’s time to burn off those pizza calories with a little Main Street exploration, followed by some much-needed spa time to relax those muscles from all the adventuring.
✅ Main Street is full of quirky, fun shops—perfect for an afternoon of wandering.
✅ Check out Flow Gallery, where you’ll find handcrafted items from over 75 artists.
✅ Or swing by French Broad Exchange for used books, vinyl records, vintage clothes, and art.
✅ If you’re more into comics and games, Main Street Comics & Games is your spot.
It’s fun to explore and find your own favorite.
✅ Next, head over to The Island, just a short walk from Main Street (no car required unless you’re in the mood to drive).
The Island is home to Marshall High Studios, (which was once Marshall High School) and has been transformed into artist lofts—like a mini River Arts District.
You can wander through the halls and see the old gymnasium inside the school building. Let your imagination bring up visions of the basketball games and school dances that took place there long ago.
If you’re lucky, you may get a chance to see an open door, welcoming guests to pop into open studios for a chat with the artists.
When I was walked through I was lucky enough to find the stuido door of artist, John Byrd, open and welcoming in room 200. He’s open to guests who come in to sit for a bit and chat about his art.
*Please note, most artists at Marshall High Studios prefer that you book an appointment in advance, rather than popping in unannounced, so please make sure you are respectful of each artists time and space.
And if you’re feeling creative, check ahead, some of the artists offer classes.
Outside of Marshall High Studios is a park, playground, and walking trail nearby, with great views of Marshall across the river where you can enjoy a relaxing afternoon on the Island.
Directly across from The Island, you’ll find the Spa at Capitola Mill—the perfect spot to soothe those tired muscles after a day of adventure.
After wandering through shops and taking in the local art, a little spa time will feel like heaven!
Your feet will thank you!
Dinner
For dinner, head back to The Old Marshall Jail and check out Zadies Market, their on-site restaurant with a view of the French Broad River.
You don’t need to be a hotel guest to enjoy this culinary gem—everyone’s welcome!
Just like the hotel, Zadies celebrates the jail’s history with museum-quality artifacts. One of my favorite and quirkiest finds is the “Gone Fishing” contraption inmates used to smuggle cigarettes, whiskey, and who knows what else.
The creativity in repurposing jail remnants is impressive—tabletops made from old doors, deck railings from cell bars—you’ll feel like you’re dining in a piece of history, because, well. . . you are!
You can eat inside or on the patio, but since I was a hotel guest, I decided to take my meal back to my room for a little extra comfort.
I went with the Greek salad and a bowl of tomato soup with toast, and let me tell you, both were heavenly. Simple, fresh, and exactly what I needed after a day full of adventure.
Evening Entertainment
The Depot
Even though Marshall only has a population of 815 and ranks as the 487th most populated city in North Carolina, don’t let its small size fool you—this town is big on live music.
The music scene here is alive and well, offering a variety of performances depending on the day or time of the month.
I happened to be in Marshall on a Friday night where the Depot was hosting their family-friendly flagship live music show. In addition to multiple bands playing on stage, there’s also
a cakewalk
raffle
dance floor
and concessions!
Whether you’re into folk, bluegrass, into open mic nights, or something a little more modern, Marshall’s got a place for you to catch some great tunes.
There’s other nearby venues to see what live music events are happening during your visit. It’s the perfect way to wrap up a day of exploring this charming town!
Here’s some local spots to look into to see what’s going on during your visit:
Zadies Market
Mal’s
The Island
If there isn’t live music going on when you’re there, stop by Zadies Market located in the Old Marshall Jail Hotel and enjoy a low-key evening with a drink, conversation and the unique atmosphere. Take time to look over the museum quality jail artifacts and photos decorating the walls and the halls.
They even have some board games in the dining room. Grab one and have some good ol’ fashioned off-line fun!
