An Honest Review: The Sunset Inn – Sunset Beach, NC
As a travel writer for North Carolina Traveler, I get invited to visit incredible places all over the state—but few offers made me reply “Yes!” faster than the one I got from The Sunset Inn at Sunset Beach, NC.
I’d seen the inn online and passed by Sunset Beach plenty of times, but I had never stopped to explore this little slice of paradise for myself.
So when I was asked to do a review, I packed my bags and hit the road.
Now that I’ve stayed here, I can tell you this: the pictures don’t lie. The Sunset Inn is every bit as beautiful in person as it is online—maybe even more.

Hotel: Pros
- Marsh-front views that steal your breath before you even check in
- Spacious rooms with charming, coastal-themed decor
- Private screened-in porches with rocking chairs and swings
- Short walk to the beach, pier, and shops
- Friendly staff and welcoming vibe
- Extra amenities like lower-level storage units, rinse-off showers, and on-site vending
- Handicap lift that goes from the ground floor to the lobby level.

Rooms
The Sunset Inn offers 14 uniquely decorated guest rooms, each thoughtfully designed with comfort, charm, and marshside relaxation in mind.
Room Layout Note:
The top floor includes
the Hatteras Grand Room
Scotch Bonnet Room
Hibiscus Room
Azalea Room
Bermuda Room
Charleston Room
and Bird Island Grand Room.

On the lobby level you’ll find
the Old Baldy Grand Room
Smithville Room
Dogwood Room
* Live Oak Room (handicap bathroom)
Magnolia Room
Oleander Room
and the Vesta Grand Room.
There are no guest rooms on the ground floor—that level is used for guest storage rooms, perfect for beach gear, rented bikes, or anything else you don’t want cluttering your room or car.
There’s also a handy rinse-off shower down there so you can wash off the sand before heading upstairs.
Grand Rooms

These are the larger, more spacious corner rooms that include whirlpool tubs and expanded layouts. The Grand Rooms are:
- Hatteras Grand Room
- Bird Island Grand Room
- Old Baldy Grand Room
- Vesta Grand Room
I stayed in the Bird Island Grand Room, and the moment I opened the door, I was in awe. The subtle yellow walls paired with blue and white accents made the whole room feel like a nod to nearby Bird Island and the famous Kindred Spirit Mailbox. There’s a coffee maker and fridge inside, perfect for a cozy morning or evening on your private porch. Speaking of which…
There’s a front shared walkway with rocking chairs to greet fellow guests, and a back screened-in porch that is way bigger than I expected. Two rocking chairs and a swing overlook the marsh, and it turns out you can watch sunrise from the swing and sunset from the rockers. Trust me—I did both.

Pro Tip:
There is no elevator in the building. While the inn has three levels, there are no guest rooms on the ground floor—only storage units and a rinse-off shower.
All rooms are located either on the lobby level or the top floor, both of which require taking stairs. Reaching the top floor involves approximately 30 stairs.
Either way, a grocery caddy with stair wheels is a brilliant packing tip—helpful for luggage and doubles as a beach tote.
Accessibility Note:
While The Sunset Inn does not have an elevator to the top floor, there is a handicap lift located just outside the back lobby door that provides access from the ground level to the lobby level. This makes it possible for guests with mobility needs to reach the lobby-level rooms. The Live Oak Room is situated nearby and features a handicap-accessible bathroom, making it a more accommodating option for those who need it. Be sure to mention any accessibility needs when booking so the staff can ensure the best room for your stay.

Best Feature

Hands-down: that screened-in porch with the marsh view.
Watching the sun set from a rocking chair and the sunrise from the swing the next morning was pure magic.
If you are in a Grand Room you also get a whirlpool tub, which was also one of my top favorite features.
Location / Surrounding Area

You can actually see the back of the inn across the marsh as you cross the bridge onto Sunset Beach Island—it’s a show-stopper of a view.
The inn is just a short walk to the beach, the pier, and a handful of shops where you can get souvenirs, beach supplies, and even pastries or ice cream.
For dinner, you’ll want to head to the mainland (a super quick drive) or order delivery.
My first night, I went to Fibber McGees and ordered a salmon burger with aioli and a fresh lemon slice. Paired with a local brew, it was delicious. The place was hopping with a friendly vibe that made it feel like I had walked into a local hangout.

Heads up: don’t wait until the last minute—you may encounter a wait for a table.
If you’re trying to catch that first-night sunset like I was, give yourself time. Luckily, I made it back just in time to watch the colors explode from my porch.
Hotel: Cons
Limited Accessibility to Upper Floors
There is no elevator to the top floor, so guests with mobility concerns will want to book a room on the lobby level. While there is a handicap lift from the ground level to the lobby, it does not go to the third floor. The Live Oak Room near the lift features a handicap-accessible bathroom and is a good option for guests needing additional accessibility.
Not Family-Friendly for Young Kids or Pets
Children under 12 are not allowed. If you’re planning a family trip with little ones or pets, this isn’t the spot.
No On-Site Restaurant
You can grab an included continental breakfast from the lobby dining room in the morning and light snacks. There are some stores with snacks, sandwiches and drinks nearby, but for dinner you’ll need to leave the island or order in.
Fortunately, the mainland is close and easy to access.

Pro Tip: Order a Charcuterie Box!
Order a charcuterie box from Host & Graze! You can pick it up from their shop on the mainland or even have it added as an add-on to your room when you book. It was a lifesaver for me after an early morning walk—I just grabbed it from the mini fridge and enjoyed a relaxing, no-fuss lunch on the porch.
Who Is This Hotel Good For? Who Is It Not?

- Girls Trips
- Nicholas Sparks Fans

Cleanliness | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ |

Note: I was honestly hard-pressed to give it a 5 for amenities. For a bed and breakfast, they go above and beyond. But since it is a bit tricky to get a full meal without leaving the island or ordering in, and there’s not check in after 6PM, I felt it was fair—begrudgingly—to give it a 4.
Would I Stay Again?

Absolutely!
I loved the peaceful vibe, friendly service, the view of the marsh at sunset, and the overall comfort of the inn.
When I return, I would definitely pay a little extra for a Grand Room. The larger screened-in porch with its stunning corner view—and that whirlpool tub—were two of my favorite features and absolutely worth the upgrade.

What is There to Do around the Sunset Inn?

- Sunset Beach Pier – Just a few blocks from the inn, it’s a great spot to stroll, fish, or snap a classic coastal photo.
- The Wind Phone – Tucked near the dunes, this poetic and reflective spot lets visitors “send messages” to lost loved ones. Quiet, moving, and uniquely beautiful.
- Sunset Beach Town Park – Located along the Intracoastal Waterway, this scenic park has picnic spots, a kayak launch, and walking trails with peaceful views.
- The Old Bridge Museum – Learn the story of the old swing bridge that once connected the island to the mainland. It’s a small but meaningful stop with great local charm.
- Calabash & Shallotte – Just a short drive inland, these towns offer everything from fresh seafood to shops, mini golf, and conveniences if you need a quick grocery run or dinner off-island.
- Day Trips to Wilmington or Myrtle Beach – Sunset Beach is beautifully situated about halfway between these two vibrant cities. Whether you’re craving a historic walking tour in Wilmington or neon-lit boardwalk fun in Myrtle, you’re close enough to enjoy either (or both!) as a day trip.
- The Kindred Spirit Mailbox – About a 1.5-mile walk down the beach from the pier, this weathered mailbox on Bird Island holds handwritten journals and letters from strangers all over the world. People come to read and write messages of love, loss, hope, and healing. It’s a walk that feeds the soul.
